War Sailing Marina del Rey (California)

On 7/15/2003, I motored around Marina del Rey (California) and stumbled into 290 Wi-Fi 802.11b access points. This is a revised map done with an SMC2532W-B card. Here's a map of The Marina.

In the cockpit, I mounted a semi-permanent 6.5' stainless pole with a rigid N-male connector. The usual antenna is the 8dBi omni, Hyperlink HGV2409U. It is mounted just high enough so it can be removed & a 13dBi patch antenna (ARC Wireless Solutions AAI-00079) mounted in its place. This patch antenna was used for this War Sailing, pointed 90 degrees toward the starboard beam. If you have Microsoft MapPoint, you should download my PTM file. Just "open" the file, it will launch MapPoint. To download the MapPoint file, with SSID's, MAC addresses..., click here. Click here to download an Excel file with all this information. Click here to download the raw NetStumbler file. If you want to know how to create this map, click here to see the procedure I used.

Here's a photo of the usual omni antenna and the patch antenna that replaces it.

Near my right knee is the GPS antenna, used with the NetStumbler program. The Garmin shipboard GPS is wired to the laptop. The Toshiba laptop is also visible.

Here's a shot testing the system (actually in King Harbor).

I have also been successful in the dinghy. Here's a shot, of what I call War Dingying.
