We just replaced our water heater since it was a rusty mess. Found that a 10 gallon Isotemp standard heater will fit in the same location (protruding slightly further aft). Getting the old one out isn't easy, but it just barely fits out over the engine. If you need more details, feel free to email me.

: If this is the original Water heater it is nopw approaching 13 years of service...It may be time to consider replacement if there are any leaks. I agree that drain and flush is in order. You may even consider addition of "sweet water" additive to neutralize any ongoing foul odor. That water within the heater could have sat stagnating for who knows how long. good luck

: : I never had this problem on boat but have had it at home. Something about hot water tank produces hydrogen sulfide. Solution is to drain the tank and refill. You can clean it out by using the drain valve at the bottom of tank which has a garden hose fitting. Run a hose over the side and turn on the pump to flush out the tank. I don't recommend dumping into the bilge.

: : : Just got Catalina 42 (1990) last year from 1st owner, and have been trying to deal with very strong odor that permeates things when I turn on the hot water faucet (cold water is fine).

: : : The water that comes out is quite clear from both hot and cold. My guess is that there's something in the hot water tank or old water? Have any of you had this problem, and if so o\how did you deal with it.
