I found the steps very slippery when wet also. I used West Marine non-skid tape with a clear base. First however I added a few extra coats of varnish and then cut the tape in pieces with round edges(to keep it from pealing at the corners) and placed the pieces in a pattern to match the steps. This has now lasted 8 years and still looks good (hard to see) while giving excellent footing.
